18 – 20 October 2024

So many plant species around us have medicinal value. In this workshop, Liana Jansen of Fijn Botanicals will teach you to identify some indigenous Fynbos medicinal plants. We will then learn how to harness their medicinal properties, covering a variety of extraction methods, including a steam distillation demonstration by Petrus Jansen. The resultant extractions will be used in a selection of formulations, ranging from healing sprays to balms, creams and finally perfume.

This intimate workshop is hosted at Kogman and Keisie Organic Farm, the home of Fijn Botanicals in Montagu, Western Cape. The five bedrooms are tastefully appointed and the living areas are comfortable and elegant.

This workshop can only accommodate 10 participants, either sharing a bedroom (1 Twin and 4 Queen bedrooms available) or booking a private room (single participant).

18 – 20 October 2024

Fynbos (which means “fine-leaved plants”) is an extraordinary type of vegetation that occurs solely on the southern tip of Africa. The Cape Floristic Region is a biodiversity hotspot and one of the world’s six floral kingdoms. It is not only the smallest but also the only one located in a single country. The number of unique Fynbos species makes it by far the richest. With its high rate of endemism, around 70% of the Fynbos species grows nowhere else in the world but in one specific, geographic location. This means that when compared to some of the other floras across the globe, the Cape Floral Kingdom outshines even the Amazon rainforest in terms of sheer diversity. A very large number of fynbos plant species are used in traditional medicine, and while only a tiny proportion have as yet been subjected to formal testing, many have already been identified as having medicinal properties

Before Liana moved to the farm, she used to be a lecturer in Landscape Architecture at the Universities of Pretoria and Cape Town. She strives to understand ecosystems, how plants reflect the environment they grow in and how people utilise the plants in their landscape. Teaching is another one of her passions, and she is excited to share the knowledge gained in developing the Fijn Botanical products – she believes every person should have access to good quality, affordable healing skincare.

Petrus’ passion is farming and cultivating with nature and this naturally progressed to working with natural materials to distill essential oils and pure ethanol for our formulations. He grows several heirloom seed varieties on the farm and also has an online shop for selling grow media and natural plant remedies for home growers (growfolk.co.za).

The workshop will start with a walk in the mountains behind Kogman and Keisie and Liana will explain the landscape and the plants, highlighting those species with exceptional healing properties. We will also harvest some species on the farm for steam distillation and tincture preparation. After tea, we will begin the preparation of healing tinctures and make a Fynbos healing spray to take home. We will spend the afternoon by going through the details of steam distillation to produce essential oils and hydrosols.

The next day’s first session will teach you the rules of formulating your products by making your very own Body Butter with natural ingredients. We will then have a lovely introspective session to discover your scent and work on a formulation to craft an individual perfume for every participant.

The Kogman and Keisie team will look after your every need during the weekend. You will receive healthy and hearty meals, including refreshments and snacks between sessions. Accommodation includes spacious and comfortable rooms in the Guesthouse or rooms in the self-catering cottage set on our working organic farm. The farm provides unique opportunities for workshop sessions and intimate gatherings over great food. All workshop sessions will happen in our Greenhouse or in other spaces on the farm.
